Beware of bears！A cozy, artsy café in Tainan—Mr. Banana Bread with Light Whipped Cream

Many foodies in Tainan are no strangers to this place, Dot Café. Its closure in 2015 caught many off guard, and the storefront remained empty for a while. Eventually, it was taken over by Xiong Xiong Food Society.

I had planned to visit after its reopening but totally forgot... Sometimes, dining really is about timing. The layout hasn’t changed much from before, but Xiong Xiong Food Society ties the whole café together with a bear theme—it’s really adorable.

The second floor also has a six-seater table, decorated in its own unique style

After admiring the lovely ambiance, let’s check out the menu

99% of the ingredients used in the café are locally sourced (I almost wrote 99.9% because I just finished watching that Japanese drama)

Xiong Xiong Food Society not only uses local ingredients but also cares about environmental issues and incorporates them into the café

The savory tart of the day wasa bitter melon + pumpkin “Golden Sand” gourd tart

The crust is an uncommon puff pastry, making it crunchier (theoretically higher in calories, but since the café uses rice flour, I’m not entirely sure). The filling has a subtle bitterness but is surprisingly enjoyable. Little Bao complained about it, but Sandra and I both thought it was delicious.

The cold-brewed tea is sweet and mellow, and the plum juice tastes quite similar to my favorite Shang Yuan Tang. Both drinks are refreshingly cool for summer without being overly sweet

Peanuts from Beigang and bananas are blended into light whipped cream, creating a simple yet delightful flavor

‎Summer Afternoon Cake

At first glance, you might think it’s a matcha cake, but the green color comes from mugwort. It doesn’t have an overpowering taste—instead, the rich red bean and whipped cream flavors stand out. It’s a unique and tasty cake (reportedly a seasonal special)!

There’s another cake in the display case that caught my eye, but I’ll save it for next time

Xiong Xiong Food Society isn’t just about delicious food—the atmosphere and service also leave a very positive impression. The overall vibe is as warm as the cover photo I specifically chose. I really appreciate the focus on local ingredients and sustainability. After this visit, there will definitely be countless more to come. Here, I’m sharing this great café with everyone
