Taichung has introduced autonomous buses that combine driving control computers and artificial intelligence to automatically stop at designated stations. From December 22 to January 21 of next year, these buses will be available for free public trial rides along Zhongke Road in Shuins Smart City (the section between Dapeng Road and Zhijingji Economic and Trade Zone 5), where citizens can ride for free. Additionally, Taichung residents can make online or on-site reservations using their Flower Expo Card.

Currently, Taichung’s self-driving vehicle project includes two autonomous buses. One low-floor bus from Fengrong Bus has been retrofitted with an autonomous driving system, while the Auto King Electronics and ITRI collaboration also provides an autonomous midibus for free operation in Taichung.

The appearance of the autonomous buses is no different from regular buses. A sensor system is installed behind the driver's seat inside the vehicle, allowing the bus to travel and stop automatically according to computer-set routes without human intervention. If the vehicle deviates from its route or detects foreign objects nearby, the system will issue a warning or even apply emergency brakes automatically.

Until January 21 of next year, the public can visit Shuins Smart City to be among the first to experience the service. Those with a Flower Expo Card can make online reservations or sign up on-site. The first bus departs at 9 AM and the last at 4:30 PM daily. Traffic controls will be in place on-site.
