Scorching deserts, freezing mountains, and sweltering rainforests—over 139 days, Apo set off from Mexico, traversed the entire western United States, and arrived at the Canadian border, covering more than 4,000 kilometers of mountain trails and hiking one of the world’s most challenging treks—the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT).
“The PCT is like a strict teacher. Over these hundred-plus days, it constantly tested us with diverse terrains—the over 30-kilometer waterless zone in Southern California’s desert with temperatures exceeding 40°C, the 4,000-meter-high Sierra snow plateau with waist-deep creeks, and the continuous downpours, hail, and blizzards in Washington’s Wonderland. One challenge after another was overcome. Before reaching the end, the strict teacher turned gentle, as the final 10 kilometers were all gentle downhill slopes—easy and allowing me to reflect on the hardships of the past.”
Two years ago, Apo resolutely quit his job as a journalist, believing that hiking is the best way to get to know oneself. He once spent 56 days hiking 1,303 kilometers to circle Taiwan, and also ventured into the Himalayas in Nepal. This time, he spent 139 days traveling from Mexico to Canada. What has hiking brought Apo? What challenges did he face along the way? How did he deal with swarms of crazy mosquitoes? How did he bathe on the trail? As a traveler, how can one achieve both “chasing dreams” and “reality”—two seemingly opposing pursuits?
