The name Mika Ninagawa is likely familiar to many Hong Kong locals who follow Japanese culture. This photographer and film director has recently collaborated once again with the jellyfish exhibit at Tokyo’s Sumida Aquarium. Her vibrant and richly colorful style is on display alongside the ethereal jellyfish beneath the sea. From the moment you step into the exhibit, visitors feel as though they’ve entered a kaleidoscope, admiring the graceful movements of the jellyfish under mesmerizing lights.
The venue’s 18 jellyfish tanks are all set against backdrops of imagery and photo displays supervised and produced by Mika Ninagawa. Upon entering, two massive jellyfish display tanks welcome guests, while eight U-shaped tanks nearby showcase different species of jellyfish. Watching the tiny jellyfish swim as if in a painter’s palette instantly transports your eyes into a world of color — a delight for both adults and children alike.
Another must-see highlight is the jellyfish kaleidoscope corridor made from approximately 5,000 mirrors. Walking along the roughly 50-meter-long slope flanked by eight tanks, each reflecting Mika Ninagawa’s photographic works, the mirrored reflections projected all around make you feel as if you’re inside a giant kaleidoscope, momentarily surrounded by endless bursts of color. With a hint of gentle fragrance in the air, the experience is simply magical.
Also, don’t rush to leave while you’re in the corridor, because there’s also a roughly 7-minute video artwork playing. Watching jellyfish intermingle with randomly changing backgrounds is incredibly soothing. The best part? There are different versions for morning and evening time slots, so you can come back and watch it again.
