Nowadays, all you need when traveling is a smartphone — booking check-ins, meals, accommodation, and transport are all done with a tap of your phone. But the biggest fear is running out of battery or not having internet access upon arrival, making it difficult to find nearby food or attractions. However, if you visit London in 2017, you’ll notice a new type of red telephone booth scattered across the city that might just be what you need.
BT (British Telecom) will launch a brand-new service called LinkUK, installing Link telephone booths on major streets in London. These booths will offer temporary charging and high-speed free Wi-Fi, with data speeds expected to reach 1Gbps, capable of supporting hundreds of users simultaneously. Additionally, they will feature touch-screen tablet interfaces providing map searches, directions, and free calling services.
Most importantly, the Link telephone booths won’t cost taxpayers a penny. Instead, they will generate advertising revenue through partnerships with advertising company Primesight, using the dual 55-inch displays on each booth to support the project.
It is expected that 100 new-style telephone booths will be installed in 2017, with the potential to reach 750 within a few years. So when you visit London in the future, you won’t have to worry about your phone dying while exploring the city!
