As avid readers, we love visiting unique libraries. When we heard that the new Likyung Memorial Branch of the Taichung Public Library had opened, we made sure to include it in our Taichung family trip itinerary and brought our child along to dive into the world of books.
Located at the intersection of Gōngyì Rd. and Longfu Rd. in Nantun District, Taichung City, the Likyung Memorial Branch of the Taichung Public Library draws inspiration from Japan’s Takeo Central Library, blends with the surrounding park greenery, and connects with nearby areas to form a water-themed environmental education park. From the moment you step into the library, a refreshing and comfortable atmosphere gently envelops you.

There is a 24-hour automated book return box at the entrance.

The Likyung Memorial Branch of the Taichung Public Library focuses on “early childhood education,” with its operational themes centered around “the sound of children reading, kids’ smiles, a living room for citizens, and a reading café.”The entire library spans three floors, featuring children’s and infants’ reading rooms, a newspaper and periodicals area, and a teen reading zone.
“So cute—an armadillo!” On the first floor, there’s an eye-catching armadillo mascot, roughly the height of a child. In fact, it’s a self-service book borrowing machine—super user-friendly and designed to help kids learn how to borrow and return books.

Another major highlight is a giant, floor-high colored crayon—it leads us into a whimsical, imaginative reading space that has us excited for what’s to come…

Aligned with the current exhibition theme “My Big Adventure in Children’s Books,” there’s a tunnel made from large honeycomb cardboard boxes—it’s a novel experience crawling through it, while the exterior is decorated with introductions to several beloved children's book authors.
No sooner had we entered than Yo found fun—he crawled into the honeycomb to give us a surprise.
“Ha, who’s calling you? Such a good actor!” We thought the phone next to us was just for show, but Yo listened with rapt attention—and the receiver actually plays audio introducing the authors featured on the cardboard displays.
The children’s reading room is designed with big wooden shelves, wooden flooring and ceilings, along with colorful patterns, creating a cozy and warm ambiance. Here, kids naturally pick up books, making reading a truly wonderful activity.
We love the creative reading spaces in the children’s area the most.
1. We’ve enjoyed the glass-enclosed reading room at the Linkou Dongshi Reading Room.
2. The Jjiangzicui Branch of the New Taipei City Public Library has a semicircular reading area and container-style reading spaces.
3. The Sanxia Beida Branch of the New Taipei City Public Library has mobile shelving.
4. The Luzhou Chang’an Branch of the New Taipei City Public Library features a spaceship-themed audiovisual room.
5. The Parent-Child Aesthetic Digital Library has a treehole reading area.
The Likyung Memorial Branch of the Taichung Public Library also has a cave-like reading nook. Little mouse Yo—who always seeks out holes at any library—has already crawled in with a book, immersed in his ocean of stories.
This reading area is so beautiful too. Paired with wooden flooring and colorful themed chairs, it creates a fresh and delightful reading world.
Being able to read comfortably wherever you go—we really love this kind of environment and atmosphere.
Even the curtains have a secret meaning. The “word towers” teach kids about repeated characters—some of them I didn’t even know myself, and Yo even stumped me for a bit. But it became a chance for both of us to learn lots of new words together.
Another reading area is great too, and there’s even a space for events. You need to take off your shoes to enter this one.
Currently, the Taichung Municipal Library Lai Ko-Yung Memorial Branch houses 877 volumes in its special collection. It also regularly hosts lectures by domestic picture book authors and illustrators, as well as early childhood picture book presentations, using parent-child reading activities to foster children’s love of reading and enhance their literary knowledge.
Go upstairs and explore the other floors too!
The second floor features sections for periodicals and newspapers, a seniors' area, parenting and child-rearing books, as well as open-shelf reading areas. It provides a variety of resources for the general public, new parents, and early childhood educators. There's a great selection of newspapers and magazines, and the spatial design on this level is just beautiful!
Even the reading chairs are comfy and stylish — you might just doze off while reading!
My favorite spot is the window-side seating area. When you're tired of reading, you can gaze out at the natural greenery, soak up some sun, and feel completely refreshed!
This floor also has computers available for internet research.
Scan the QR code to take e-books with you — convenient and time-saving.
The third floor is the teen reading area and information retrieval zone.
This reading space is so comfortable that I noticed several elementary school students really love hanging out here — Yo is one of them.
Turns out, the shelves next to the seats here are lined with all kinds of comics, no wonder they attract kids like magnets. Are the Doraemon comics enlarged under a giant light? They’re huge. Comics are just meant to be read like this — so satisfying. I’d love to buy the whole set to keep at home.
The most popular ones among elementary kids, like Detective Conan and Pokémon, are all here.
It’s rare to see such a complete collection of comics in a library. Yo seized every second and specifically asked us not to interrupt him. It reminded me of the times I used to huddle in my cousin’s room with my sisters, reading “Doraemon” (yep, back when it was still called Doraemon), and I couldn’t help but smile. That’s what carefree childhood is all about!
The third floor also has discussion rooms, offering private spaces for small meetings.
As you walk out of the Taichung Municipal Library Lai Ko-Yung Memorial Branch, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find a coffee vending machine right outside. Grab a book and a cup of coffee, and enjoy reading in this high-quality natural setting — what a wonderful experience!
But kids see the world differently. The sharp-eyed one has already spotted the large slide in the playground and is ready to play!
The Taichung Municipal Library Lai Ko-Yung Memorial Branch brings the greenery of the park into the library, giving the feeling of reading in a park. Kids are naturally drawn to pick up a book and cozy up in a corner, thanks to this playful reading environment. We all love this unique library and didn’t want to leave!
