Print out the colors kids can search for on their walks outside. Children love trying to find things in nature that represent each color on their list, and this way of exploring the outdoors and taking a stroll is a great activity.
Outdoor Exploration
Kids who love exploring outdoors: we’re looking for sand crabs on the beach, and we’re hunting for fun things around town...
Sometimes we enjoy the scenery along the walking route, and we can focus on searching for specific items.
For example——
§ We take a walk and listen to all the sounds around us.
§ We explore outdoors, trying to find various categorized items.
§ Sometimes, we even look for treasure on the beach.
Take a walk with colors
Our latest outdoor scavenger hunt game is searching for colors while on a walk.
Before heading out, we prepare our tools—camera, a pencil, and paper—to jot down what we see. Then, when we get home, we discuss what we found.
Discussion and Creating a Collage
We collect the items kids find that represent each color and have them record them on their scavenger hunt sheet. When they find a satisfying match, they mark a check on the item they discovered… if not, they mark an X.
I love encouraging kids to look for details in nature while on a walk. We carefully observe the colors of nature and discover that many things aren’t just one color.
Kids get excited finding marching lines of ants, different leaves falling, wildflowers blooming in corners… there’s a sense of fun in every outdoor moment.
Back at home, it’s time for discussion—and creating a collage...
