Don’t let rabies spread!

To contain the rabies outbreak within wildlife populations and ensure the safety of pets, pet owners, and all park visitors, the Forestry Bureau under the Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan, announced on July 26,that from August 1 to July 31, 2017, it is prohibited to bring mammals such as dogs and cats into national forest recreation areas, lowland forest parks, and Lala Mountain Nature Reserve. Violators may face fines ranging from NT$50,000 to NT$1 million.

Since 2013, when Taiwan detected rabies in Formosan ferret-badgers, positive cases have continued to emerge. Therefore, in consideration of outbreak prevention, risk management, and the safety of pets entering parks, it is necessary to effectively reduce contact between pets and wildlife. Accordingly, under the Animal Disease Control Act, the Forestry Bureau has announced a ban on bringing mammals such as dogs and cats into national forest recreation areas, lowland forest parks, and Lala Mountain Nature Reserve.
The banned areas include 18 national forest recreation areas: Taiping Mountain, Neidong, Manyueyuan, Dongyanshan, Guanwu, Daxueshan, Baxianshan, Wuling, Hehuanshan, Aowanda, Alishan, Tengzhi, Shuangliu, Kenting, Zhiben, Xiangyang, Fuyuan, and Chinan. Additionally, the following three forest recreation areas are also included in the ban: Danong Danfu Lowland Forest Park, Aogu Wetland Forest Park, Linhou Slin Lowland Forest Park, as well as the Qilan, Mingchi, and Huisun Forest Stations. Visitors are advised to take note before traveling.
Furthermore, to protect your own safety, visitors are advised not to touch or feed wild animals when visiting forest recreation areas. If you spot animals suspected of having rabies, please report them immediately to animal disease control authorities or the local forestry district offices under the Forestry Bureau.
