In hot weather, it's important to master proper hydration techniques when traveling in summer.

Drink an appropriate amount of lightly salted water

Drinking some lightly salted water during your trip can replenish the inorganic salts lost through excessive sweating. The easiest method is to add 1 gram of salt to 500 milliliters of drinking water and consume it at appropriate times. This helps meet your body’s needs while also preventing electrolyte imbalance.

Drink frequently but in small amounts

Many people habitually decide whether to drink water based on thirst, but this is unscientific. Thirst is actually a key signal that your body’s water balance has already been disrupted. During travel, avoid drinking large amounts of water at once. Instead, sip small quantities frequently to aid absorption. The ideal approach is to drink 100 to 150 milliliters of water at a time, with intervals of about half an hour.

Avoid very cold water

Try to avoid drinking water that’s too cold, and don’t indulge in excessive cold drinks for momentary relief. During physical activity in summer travel, your body temperature is usually elevated, and consuming large amounts of cold beverages can easily lead to digestive system issues. When traveling, your body generates significant heat, putting your internal organs in a much warmer state than usual. Drinking lots of cold fluids at such times can cause sudden contraction of the throat, esophagus, and stomach, leading to discomfort—commonly known as “lung shock.” Experts recommend that travelers avoid drinks below 5°C, and that drinking lightly salted water around 10°C is more scientific. This approach not only cools and quenches thirst but also avoids upsetting the stomach while promptly replenishing necessary salts.
