With over 60 years of history, the Makishi Public Market No. 1 evolved from a post-war black market. It gathers all kinds of local Okinawan ingredients and is the most representative "marketplace" for the locals.
The arcade shopping street centered around Makishi Public Market No. 1 is called "Market-hontō-dōri," and together with the adjacent "Heiwa-dōri," they form a large commercial district. Over time, large souvenir shops and drugstores have moved in. Nowadays, the Makishi Public Market and its surrounding commercial area have become a must-visit destination for tourists.
The Makishi Public Market is mainly divided into two floors: the first floor is the fresh food sales area, and the second floor consists of family-style eateries. In the seafood and meat sections, you can find daily fresh Okinawan local ingredients. There are also a variety of grocery stalls selling all kinds of cooking seasonings, dried goods, pickled foods, and more. After purchasing ingredients on the first floor, you can bring them to the second floor and have your favorite eatery cook them for you.
