Makishi Public Market No. 1 has a history of over 60 years and originated from the post-war black market. It brings together all locally sourced ingredients in Okinawa and is the most representative "market" for local Okinawan life.
The arcade shopping street centered around Makishi Public Market No. 1 is called “Market Honten,” which together with the adjacent “Heiwa-dori” forms a large commercial district. Over time, numerous large souvenir shops and drugstores have moved in. Today, Makishi Public Market along with its surrounding commercial area has become a must-visit destination for tourists.
The Makishi Public Market is mainly divided into two floors: the first floor is the fresh produce sales area, and the second floor is filled with family-run eateries. In the seafood and meat sections, you can find daily fresh local Okinawan ingredients. There are also a variety of grocery stalls selling various cooking seasonings, dried goods, pickled foods, and more. After purchasing ingredients on the first floor, you can take them upstairs to your favorite eatery for preparation and enjoyment.
