The First Makishi Public Market has a history of over 60 years and originated from a post-war black market. It brings together all locally sourced ingredients in Okinawa, making it the most representative “marketplace” for the locals.
The arcade shopping street centered around the First Makishi Public Market is called “Market-dori,” which, along with the adjacent “Heiwa-dori,” forms a large commercial district. Over time, major souvenir shops and drugstores have moved in. Today, the Makishi Public Market and its surrounding commercial area have become must-visit destinations for tourists.
The Makishi Public Market is mainly divided into two floors: the first floor is the fresh produce section, and the second floor consists of family-run eateries. In the seafood and meat sections, you can find daily deliveries of local Okinawan ingredients. There are also a variety of grocery stalls selling cooking seasonings, dried goods, pickles, and more. After purchasing ingredients on the first floor, you can take them to your favorite eatery on the second floor to have them cooked and enjoy a meal.
