Five-star scenic toilets appear along Taipei’s riverside parks — “gender-friendly” becomes a highlight

As riverside parks in the vicinity gradually become popular spaces for exercise and leisure, the Water Resources Bureau of Taipei City Government’s Public Works Department has renovated “riverside park scenic toilets” at 10 locations. Completed in mid-July, these facilities will offer residents a more comfortable and convenient toilet experience.

The renovation and setup of the scenic riverside park toilets include 10 locations: Guanshan, Meiti, Chengmei, Caihong, Shizidao, Yanping, Machangting, and Daonan. In total, 9 male toilets, 13 gender-friendly toilets, and 18 gender-friendly & barrier-free toilets have been installed. Among them, 4 scenic toilets — located near Dadaocheng Wharf and Yanping Temple in Yanping Riverside Park, next to Hengguang Bridge in Daonan Riverside Park, and by Xikou Wharf in Chengmei Left Bank Riverside Park — have already opened to the public. The remaining 6 will be gradually opened starting August after passing initial inspections.

The Water Resources Bureau explained that the newly renovated scenic toilets not only feature bright, eye-catching colors, but also have stainless steel interiors and ample space that allows visitors to park their bicycles. They also include “gender-friendly toilets.” The lighting uses motion-sensor LED strips to enhance brightness. Inside, there are three types of toilet facilities: urinals, squat toilets, and sit-down toilets, which can be used by people of all genders and ages. This improves overall restroom usage and helps alleviate queues at female toilets. Additionally, an “in-use” indicator light has been installed outside each toilet for users’ convenience.
