Buchika became famous at a young age, winning the "U.S. Junior Slalom" championship at 16. In 1966, the celebrated youngster successfully joined the alpine skiing team at Middlebury College, under the mentorship of skiing legend and Olympic skiing champion Brooks Dodge. However, he faced numerous setbacks afterward, struggling to become a standout figure on the international stage and even failing to improve his professional level. Nevertheless, encouraged by his teachers and family, Buchika never gave up on his dream and eventually won the long-coveted world championship trophy in 1969. After becoming a world champion, Buchika actively explored other sports and in 1977 claimed both the ski racing championship and the amateur division title in bicycle riding.
Buchika was not only a genius in the sports world but also possessed extraordinary business acumen. Starting in 1970, he assisted his father in managing their business in Salem. Later, with his father’s support, he established his own ski equipment rental companies in New Hampshire and Bethel, naming and registering the first ski rental company in the world after himself. This further solidified his belief in his business potential, leading him to found "Buchika Bicycle Equipment Rental Company" and "New Hampshire White Mountains Ski Area Ski Equipment Rental Company." Throughout his years in business, Buchika remained hands-on, to the extent that many procurement officers had no idea the young man they chatted and laughed with was actually their boss.
While the hardships of entrepreneurship tempered this gifted athlete’s willpower, they also relentlessly wore down his body. Despite knowing his health had significantly declined, Buchika still went to the ski slopes to relive his youth, ultimately passing away while touching his beloved skis one last time.
In recognition of Buchika’s outstanding contributions, the U.S. Ski Association honored him with the title of "Advocate of Lifetime Sports." Meanwhile, ski equipment retail stores across New England voluntarily renamed themselves "Buchika." The skiing magazine "Snow Country" even named his first ski shop operation as "The Best Ski Shop in America." Haverhill (the U.S. Haverhill Chamber of Commerce, an authoritative body in ski gear marketing) also inducted "Buchika" into the "Haverhill Hall of Fame."
Like birds leave their calls and people leave their names, the name "Buchika" will echo throughout New Hampshire and the world.
