Traversing the Himalayas — many people think this is far out of reach, but in 2012, people from Hunan actually had such an opportunity. On the morning of December 29, at the 2011 Annual Meeting of the Hunan Mountaineering Association held in Shaohu Holiday Town, Shuifu Tourism Area, Hunan, Wang Fei, secretary-general of the provincial mountaineering association, announced this plan.
It is reported that the large-scale event “Traverse the Himalayas” is initiated by the General Administration of Sport of China, with organizations in various regions arranging activities according to their own conditions. Wang Fei revealed that this major event is scheduled to take place between July and August 2012, tentatively for 13 days. The journey will be from Gyantse to Yadong in Tibet, including 5 to 6 days of trekking through snow-capped mountains and grasslands at an altitude of 4,000 meters, interspersed with meals with border outpost soldiers and donation activities to primary schools in Tibetan areas.
“Depending on registration numbers, the activity can be divided into several groups, with about 20 people in each group,” Wang Fei explained.
What kind of people are qualified to take part in such an event? “First of all, physical fitness definitely matters,” Wang Fei said. “The General Administration of Sport will assess the health condition of all participants, and only those who meet the requirements can join.” Therefore, physical condition is a basic requirement for joining this event. Friends interested in taking part in the “Traverse the Himalayas” activity should start getting in shape now.
Besides the large-scale “Traverse the Himalayas” event, Hunan also has a series of outdoor activities next year, such as mass mountain-climbing fitness events and mountain sports competitions, offering a rich variety. Wang Fei introduced that if conditions allow, 1-2 team members will be selected to climb Mount Everest.
