In January 2008, while pursuing my master’s degree in Shenzhen, I traveled with my girlfriend and seven classmates to the farthest place in our dreams that year — Hainan Island. Over seven days, we cycled 450 kilometers along the east coast from Haikou to Sanya. There were the frustrations of frequent flat tires and the trials of cycling through dusty roads under construction, but more than anything, there were laughter-filled moments and memories of youth.
In December 2011, while studying in Tokyo, I flew to Australia with my bicycle and traveled with my wife to the then farthest place in our dreams — the island of Tasmania. Over 12 days, we cycled 500 kilometers along the east coast from Hobart to Launceston, as if traveling through a fairytale of time.

To be honest, Tasmania is quite small, so its range of wilderness activities isn’t very extensive. However, the sparsely populated west coast does have many pristine and undeveloped spots. These kinds of places aren’t easy for cycling — the rows of hills are a challenge to your stamina. It might be tough for you, but compared to the stunning scenery here, any difficulty is nothing. This is where you’ll find Tasmania’s most famous mountain (Mount Cradle), its most charming town (Strahan), the highest waterfall in the region (Montezuma Falls), and the most beautiful lake (Lake St Clair) — all breathtakingly beautiful.
