In 2012, the Chinese Mountaineering Association will continue to “embrace the mountains and scale new heights,” promote mass mountaineering and outdoor activities, refine the national rock climbing training team to enhance international influence, and actively advance the development of mountain disaster prevention and rescue systems. On January 18, XU Chuan, Party Committee Secretary of the Mountaineering Sports Management Center under the General Administration of Sport of China, stated: “We aim to expand and improve mass mountaineering and outdoor activities, and organize five ‘major events’—the National Mass Fitness Mountaineering Conference, the National Hiking Conference, the National Outdoor Sports Conference, the National Camping Conference, and the National Rock Climbing Exchange Conference.”
It is reported that the Chinese Mountaineering Association plans to hold dozens of domestic and international competitions in 2012, while also strengthening the development and promotion of new events. New activities such as Mountain Combat Simulation (CS), mountain extreme sports, cave exploration, wilderness survival skill competitions, and urban outdoor events (parkour) will be introduced in due course, along with enhanced training for professional technical personnel. In 2011, the Chinese Mountaineering Association organized 19 domestic and international rock climbing competitions, launched five “National Rock Climbing Divisional Competitions,” and sent athletes to participate in seven international events, achieving two world championships and breaking one world record.
The Guizhou Getu River International Rock Climbing Exchange Conference, co-hosted with enterprises, attracted over 300 elite international climbers and hundreds of domestic enthusiasts, elevating the international profile of Chinese rock climbing. Li Zhixin, Director of the Mountaineering Sports Management Center, emphasized that last year the association focused on building a rescue system for high-altitude expeditions, organizing seminars on mountain accident investigation and rescue techniques, as well as two high-altitude rescue training sessions. Progress was also made in establishing rescue bases and strengthening rescue teams.
