Masterpiece of Nature: The stunning and varied inner walls of these ice caves are formed through repeated processes of melting and refreezing, creating breathtaking formations.
According to foreign media reports, these breathtakingly beautiful glacier caves are located beneath Europe's largest glacier. Photographer Skarphéðinn Þráinsson risked his life to venture into these frigid caves in Iceland and capture these stunning sights. Recently, another photographer encountered a sudden collapse of such a cave, and Þráinsson faces the same constant danger. These caves are the result of interactions between glacial meltwater and the glacier itself. Due to the glacier's movement, the shape of these caves is in a constant state of flux.
The massive Vatnajökull ice cap has a volume of 3,100 cubic kilometers, covering 8% of Iceland’s total land area, with an average thickness exceeding 400 meters. Beneath it lie seven active volcanoes buried under the ice. One of them is the Grímsvötn volcano, which gained notoriety after a major eruption in May last year. It had previously erupted in 1996, 1998, and 2004.
Þráinsson, 39, is not only a photographer but also a mechanical engineer. He said, “Many of these glacier caves are located along the coastal ice fields of southern Iceland, with some also found in the highlands. Each summer, the size and shape of these caves change because this is when melting is most intense. The two caves I visited were about 4 meters high and 10 meters long. Entering such ice caves is dangerous because they can collapse at any time.”
He said, “We recently witnessed a tragedy when a photographer died during an exploration of such caves in Iceland due to a cave wall collapse. Therefore, we absolutely do not recommend that tourists enter these ice caves alone, and for safety reasons, I also advise against venturing into the caves without a local guide. The safest way to enter glacier caves is during the harsh winter months, when the glacier is more solidly frozen. This reduces the risk of sudden cave collapses—for example, I entered the caves in December to take these photos.”
