The Second National College Winter Training Camp Concludes Successfully

       At around 3:00 p.m. on January 19, 2012, the second batch of the College Students' Mountaineering Skills Winter Training Camp concluded at Wanlong Hotel. With this, the 10-day Second National College Winter Training Camp, which saw participation from approximately 150 students representing 17 university groups, was successfully concluded.
       That morning, as a culmination of the second batch’s training, an ice climbing competition was held, featuring intense action and continuous cheers. Later, the closing ceremony officially took place in the banquet hall of Wanlong Hotel. In addition to summarizing the training, we also openly shared our thoughts and reflections.
       This Winter Training Camp, officially named “Great Earth & Mountains National College Winter Mountaineering Skills Training Camp at Wanlong,” is the second event organized by the China University of Geosciences (CUG) Mountaineering and Rock Climbing Club (CUG Mountaineering Team) since the first national college winter training camp in spring 2011.
       This year’s winter training was divided into two batches, each lasting four days, and sequentially included events such as opening ceremony, snow walking, ice climbing, skiing, ice climbing competition, and closing ceremony.
       As just one participant, I gained three insights from this winter training:
       Hardship — we were training, not playing games. During the day, participants had to complete about seven hours of training on snow or ice in temperatures as low as minus ten degrees Celsius. At night, everyone camped in tents outdoors, with temperatures dropping to as low as minus twenty-seven degrees on several nights.
       Discipline — we were a qualified team. There were fixed daily assembly times: breakfast at 7:00 a.m., training starting at 8:00 a.m., ending at 4:00 p.m., followed by a 5:30 p.m. training summary and a 7:30 p.m. outdoor knowledge lecture. When standing, we had to quickly line up by group; when moving, we advanced in two unified columns; during training, activities were carried out in orderly sequence...
       Fulfillment — the days of winter training are unforgettable. In the tents, we experienced sleeping outdoors in minus 27°C. While skiing, our initial “trembling” facing the slopes turned into joy after safe landings. After ice climbing, we learned to be grateful to teammates who belayed us. During group movement, we got covered in snow from simulated falls. After breakfast, we felt both full and warm. After the training ended, recalling these days filled us with satisfaction and excitement.
       The Winter Training Camp served as a platform where college students across the country could connect and gain valuable experience in outdoor activities. The platform has been built, and upon it, we will continue to grow.
