Ashima started learning to climb in Central Park in 2006. In the beginning, she climbed rocks wearing tennis shoes, but later received sponsorship from the Evolv brand and got proper climbing shoes. In February 2008, young Ashima won the girls' D division (under 11) at the ABS National Youth Climbing Competition in the United States.
“I love living in New York because there are so many places to climb here. The coolest thing about climbing is that it lets people see how good you are at it, and then they like you and want to be your friends. I’ve been climbing for three years now, which is a long time for me. But I still love it, and I’m really good at it. When I face a new wall, the best feeling is reaching the top.”
“Now I practice climbing every day after school until it gets dark. When it’s not too cold or too hot, I go to the rocks in Central Park to practice. It feels great—like a big playground. When I first started climbing, I didn’t have proper shoes, just sneakers, but now Evolv sponsors me. They gave me the best climbing shoes, really comfortable and perfect for my training.”
