As part of the London Organising Committee's Olympic test event series, this Track Cycling World Cup will be held from February 16 to 19 at the newly built velodrome within the London Olympic Park. A total of 340 cyclists from 48 countries and 18 trade teams will compete in the four-day event. The field includes five Olympic champions and 16 world champions, including Britain’s Jason Kenny and Australia’s Anna Meares, both short-distance world champions, as well as German rider Robert Förstemann, who currently leads both the individual and team sprint World Cup rankings. The most intense events are expected to be the men’s and women’s team sprints, team pursuits, and keirin races.
Debbie Jevans, Director of Sport for the London Organising Committee, said, “This World Cup has attracted the world’s top cyclists, and it’s the first opportunity for athletes from around the globe to showcase their skills and tactics at our Olympic venue in front of thousands of spectators. There’s no doubt this will be an extraordinary competition. We’ll also use this event to conduct a full-scale test of venue operations.”
It is reported that tickets for this Track Cycling World Cup and Olympic test event sold out within minutes when they went on sale last November. The London Organising Committee is currently exploring ways to allow more spectators the chance to attend the event in person.
