"Climb every year, improve yourself!" The 2012 China (Sichuan) Dazhou Yuanjiu Climbing Festival Competitive Mountaineering and Public Fitness Hiking Competition was held in the scenic Fenghuang Mountain. More than 1,200 hiking enthusiasts from across the country and over 300,000 local residents took part in the competitive and fitness hiking events, jointly enjoying the festive atmosphere and the joy brought by mountain climbing.
The "Yuanjiu Climbing Festival," as a traditional climbing day in Dazhou, was officially designated as the "Yuanjiu Climbing Festival" by the municipal People's Congress in 2006. Since then, this millennia-old tradition has been infused with a modern touch. Now, "Yuanjiu Climbing" has become the most resonant "call to arms" at the start of the new year to encourage citizens to actively participate in public fitness. Every year on the ninth day of the first lunar month, hundreds of thousands of Dazhou residents take to the mountains. During the climb, they fully enjoy the pleasure of exercise and ascend to higher ground to welcome New Year blessings.

According to reports, in recent years, to promote mass hiking activities, Dazhou has invested tens of millions of yuan to build a total of over 40 kilometers of hiking and fitness trails and supporting facilities on Fenghuang Mountain, Huofeng Mountain, Xiniu Mountain, and other sites, providing safe and convenient venues for citizens to engage in hiking and fitness. "With the continuous improvement and upgrading of the hiking trails, hiking has evolved from a festival event into a preferred daily fitness activity for many Dazhou residents," said Yu Longhai, director of the Dazhou Municipal Sports Bureau. "After the Spring Festival, a series of weekend football, basketball, and table tennis leagues will also be launched to offer residents more fitness options."
