Living in the hustle and bustle of the city, especially during winter, makes it rare to have the chance to enjoy outdoor rock climbing. But now indoor rock climbing has become popular, allowing us to experience the thrill of conquering nature right in the city. It’s understood that indoor rock climbing involves ascending artificially designed walls of varying heights and difficulty levels (typically 6–8 meters high). The indoor climbing walls are covered with movable holds. These artificial holds come in various shapes and sizes. Beginners can choose larger holds, while those who have mastered some techniques can opt for smaller ones to increase the challenge and build arm strength. The movable holds also allow the climbing routes to be changed. Of course, whether choosing the wall, the holds, or the route, “progressing step by step” is always a smart approach.
Compared to outdoor rock climbing, indoor climbing offers significantly higher safety, with protective equipment such as ropes, harnesses, and carabiners. Participants use the three-point anchoring technique to climb upward along the edges, footholds, and cracks of the wall, primarily competing in difficulty, speed, and technique.
Indoor rock climbing may seem easy, but it’s challenging in practice. It requires players to combine endurance, flexibility, and balance, using holds of varying difficulty to complete advanced moves such as lateral swings and pull-ups over obstacles—finding thrill and enjoyment in the excitement. Relying solely on brute force to climb upwards will only lead to trouble. To master indoor climbing, you need to use the right techniques and apply smart force. Beginners are generally advised to start with larger, easier-to-grip holds and gradually move on to smaller holds to increase difficulty and build arm strength as they develop skills. With time, you’ll find that the various movable holds also change your climbing route each time, making the experience progressively more fun and rewarding.
Don’t assume rock climbing is just for the guys—many girls can also be seen at climbing gyms. Whenever a girl bravely climbs up the wall under the protection of a safety rope, onlookers often cheer her on. Rock climbing instructors remind climbers to keep their bodies as close to the wall as possible to conserve energy. Feet should be placed across the small indentations on the holds, which helps prevent slipping effectively.
