Every region has its unique culture. And when it comes to Maine in the United States, those familiar with the area will invariably think of lobsters, moose, and L.L.Bean. Yes, L.L.Bean — a brand founded because of hunting, further shaped by the lifelong passion for the sport of its founder, Leon Leonwood Bean, and even more so by the hunting traditions of Maine, where the brand is based — has engraved the culture of hunting deeply into its brand identity.
In 1911, Leon Leonwood Bean returned from an outdoor trip, his feet wet and cold after hours of walking through the damp, muddy brush of Maine. Uncomfortable and seeking a solution, he worked with local shoemakers to sew leather uppers onto rubber boot bottoms, creating the first pair of Maine hunting shoes — the “Bean Boot.” This innovative design was perfect for locals going out hunting and fishing, quickly earning praise and inquiries. The creative boot — the Bean Boot — forever changed the landscape of outdoor footwear and gave rise to one of America’s most successful family-run companies.
In 1912, Leon Leonwood Bean launched the outdoor footwear brand “L.L.Bean.” He obtained a mailing list of licensed hunters residing in Maine, prepared a three-page flyer, and boldly claimed: “The Bean Boot is designed by a man with 18 years of hunting experience. If you’re not wearing these boots, don’t expect to bag a moose!” He also promised that his boots would be “satisfactory in every way.”
When his brand received 100 orders, everything seemed to be on track. However, 90% of the 100 boots were returned because the leather uppers separated from the rubber soles. True to his word, Leon Leonwood Bean refunded all the customers. From this experience, he learned the importance of personally testing products, the value of honest advertising grounded in firm conviction, and the principle of customer satisfaction at all costs — leading to the launch of the “100% Satisfaction Guarantee.”
L.L.Bean quickly established itself as a reliable supplier of outdoor gear. The small company began to grow. Customers spread the word about L.L.Bean’s quality and service. The company reinvested all profits into advertising. Eager to expand its mailing list, L.L.Bean succeeded to the point that Freeport resident and Maine writer John Gould once remarked: “If you just stop to shake his hand, you’ll find his catalog in your mailbox when you get home.”
A century later, the classic shoe model — the Maine hunting boot “Bean Boot” — remains popular among outdoor enthusiasts and young people alike. This rubber boot, with new elements integrated, has become a fashion classic endlessly replicated and featured in major style magazines. But no matter how trends shift, the Bean Boot has stayed true to its original form. In fact, when Mr. L.L.Bean first designed the shoe, he didn’t focus much on aesthetics — yet this unintentional move resulted in a century-long legacy for the Bean Boot.
Over this century, the Bean Boot has maintained its tradition of handmade craftsmanship, with an annual production of only about 100,000 pairs. When asked if the Bean Boot might ever be manufactured outside of Maine, then-CEO Leon Gorman — the grandson of founder Leon Leonwood Bean — immediately refused: “Absolutely not! That’s the last thing we’d want to do.”
“Made in Maine” and the state’s hunting heritage have become the most iconic hallmarks of the Bean Boot brand. The “Bean Boots” have consistently earned industry acclaim and remain essential gear for hunters in wet weather. To this day, they are favored by icons such as Hemingway, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton.
