Two tourists hiked to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and got stranded halfway up due to exhaustion, prompting them to call the police for help. The Lijiang police deployed a search and rescue team of over 30 personnel. While they successfully rescued one tourist, the other went missing midway during the operation.
At 16:32 on March 9, the command center of the Yulong County Public Security Bureau in Lijiang City received an emergency call reporting that two tourists from Sichuan had hiked on foot from Baisha Township in Yulong County to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Due to the rugged terrain, they became too exhausted to continue descending after reaching the mountainside and requested rescue. Upon receiving the call, the Baisha Police Station and the Yulong County Fire Brigade rushed to the scene to carry out the rescue.
After more than four hours of climbing on foot, the rescue team found one of the stranded tourists, 28-year-old Dong, on the mountain around 22:00 that night. Based on the direction Dong provided, the rescuers continued searching and climbed for nearly another hour before catching a glimpse of another tourist, Zhang, wedged in a crevice on a cliff about 60 meters high. Due to the steepness of the cliff, it was too dangerous to climb down without equipment, so immediate rescue was not possible. The rescue team first arranged for the rescued tourist Dong to be sent back to the police station, and immediately organized a 20-person rescue squad to launch another attempt. However, Zhang’s whereabouts remained undiscovered.
After extensive efforts, at 13:30, the stranded tourist Zhang contacted the rescuers, stating that he had managed to escape to safety from another direction around 3:00 that morning and had already returned to his inn in Lijiang Ancient Town. Currently, the over 30 search and rescue personnel have withdrawn from the mountain, and the relevant situation is under further investigation and handling.
