Duck Beak Rock, where falls are highly likely

On the afternoon of March 27, "Wild Man," an experienced hiker with over 10 years of experience, explained that although these outdoor routes are very popular among hikers, they mostly traverse cliffs and steep terrain in the forests, posing many risks. To address this, he specifically created a hiking route map for fellow hikers to reference.
Meanwhile, "Pointy," the head of the rescue team at the Provincial Mountaineering Association, stated that in recent years, with the increasing number of hikers, many inexperienced "newbies" often get lost or encounter danger while hiking. He hopes that "newbies" will make thorough preparations before setting out.
"Newbies" should prepare thoroughly before heading out
Fuzhou has seen a growing number of outdoor hiking enthusiasts, but the professional level of hikers is not ideal. Some hikers rarely do their homework before setting out, and the desire for a "spontaneous, carefree adventure" often leads to irreparable accidents. To this end, veteran local hiker "Wild Man" reminds newcomers through this newspaper: The outdoors is dangerous—be prepared before you go.
Before heading out, it’s essential to understand the geographical environment and weather conditions of your destination, plan your route and backup plans in advance, and fully grasp key information such as traffic conditions along the way. Additionally, as a hiker, you must be aware of your own physical fitness and avoid attempting high-difficulty outdoor treks that are beyond your capabilities. If you choose adventure-oriented outdoor activities, try to hire a guide familiar with the local geography.
In terms of gear, choosing the right clothing and footwear is crucial. Opt for shoes with good grip to securely grasp rocks while climbing. Clothing should be breathable and durable, and long sleeves and pants are more effective at preventing scrapes.
Getting lost is a precursor to accidents
Speaking of getting lost, "Wild Man" has had his own experiences. But experienced hikers all know one rule: if you get lost, it’s best to backtrack to the last departure or rest point and wait for teammates to come looking for you. If you can’t retrace your steps, stay put and use a whistle, walkie-talkie, or flashlight to signal for help.
"Wild Man" recalled an incident where a hiking team got lost in Shiba Stream. The lost hikers spotted the search and rescue team walking along the streambed from halfway up the mountain. Without a whistle, and with their shouts drowned out by the sound of the stream, they could only watch helplessly as the rescue team passed by. "Wild Man" said many hikers overlook the importance of a small whistle. A whistle blast not only helps determine direction and distance, but also significantly reduces the energy expenditure of someone who is lost.
Don’t rush to stand up after a sprain or fall
When hiking outdoors, sprains and falls often occur. What should hikers do in such situations?
"If you fall, don’t rush to stand up," said Dr. Wang. If a fracture occurs, the injured person should not move around casually. Someone on-site with first aid experience should immediately immobilize the injury with a splint.
Additionally, Dr. Wang reminded that applying heat within 48 hours of localized swelling and pain is not advisable; nor should you massage the area with your hands or rub it with ginger and alcohol, as these methods can worsen swelling and pain. In case of a sprain, the injured area should be elevated and immobilized, and cold compresses (preferably ice mixed with water) should be applied immediately. Seek medical attention as soon as possible.
