In Beijing, there are many vehicles and heavy exhaust fumes, and the cycling lanes are not well regulated, making it not very suitable for cycling. Beginners may want to choose routes under 20 kilometers and head to the suburbs, riding along with friends and family while enjoying the scenery. You can also bring your “photo gear” to capture some great shots when you come across a pleasant spot. Around noon, you can have a picnic or barbecue, but be especially mindful of environmental hygiene and forest fire prevention. Based on the experience of many cycling enthusiasts, many scenic spots now offer delicious meals at local farmhouses, and carrying less weight while cycling is also a good option.
In the eyes of some professional cycling enthusiasts, the timing and regions for cycling are strictly divided by season, which they call the “clockwise seasonal cycling route.” From December of the previous year to March of the following year, you can choose days without wind in winter to cycle on flat roads in the Yizhuang Development Zone, where temperatures are slightly higher than in the northern part of Beijing. By April and May, you can head to the mountainous areas around Tanzhe Temple and Jietai Temple in western Beijing, ride up to the mountaintop to see the early-blooming flowers, and enjoy the feeling of overlooking the mountains. From May to June, you can move on to Miaofeng Mountain, which has the most pleasant weather of the year. From July to September, you can cycle around the reservoirs in Changping, Huairou, and Miyun, avoiding the crowds in the county towns—these are all great sections for cycling. Then from October to November, head to Tongzhou in eastern Beijing, where you can cycle on flat roads or ride up to Ling Mountain to increase the intensity and prepare physically for the winter. Over the course of a year, you can not only tour all around Beijing but also boost your health.
Spring Outing Cycling Routes
Urban Beginner Route: Inner Ring of the Second Ring Road
This route is suitable for urban dwellers who want to go on a spring outing but don’t have the stamina to leave the city. It’s perfect for a casual “street ride,” provided by cycling enthusiast “Chaos.” Be sure not to ride in large groups; it’s best to go with two or three people. No matter where you live in Beijing—east, west, south, or north—you can start from the point closest to your home and cycle in a loop back. This route captures the essence of Beijing’s urban landscape. Cycling clockwise avoids the hassle of crossing many roads and pushing your bike, while also allowing you to admire many iconic ancient and modern buildings in Beijing.
Suburban Beginner Route: Flower Viewing in Fragrant Hills

This is a one-way route of about 40 kilometers with beautiful scenery along the way, suitable for leisure. However, the distance is a bit long, so it requires a certain level of fitness and bike condition. But beginner cyclists can also choose to cycle in segments to reduce fatigue. This route is a new one developed by cycling enthusiast “Haoke” and is definitely worth trying.
First Segment: From Wukesong to Beigong Forest Park (Wukesong Bridge – Yuegezhuang Bridge – Jinkai Expressway Service Road – Taiziyu Village – Changxing Road – Foot of Beigong Forest Park Mountain). The total distance is about 19 kilometers, with the entire route on asphalt and cement roads and very gentle slopes.
Second Segment: Within Beigong Forest Park. The uphill climbing section is about 3 kilometers, with some steeper slopes. The area is full of blooming flowers and exceptionally beautiful scenery.
Third Segment: Round trip from Dahuichang Village to Qinglong Lake Park (Dahuichang Road – Shaguocun – Xiazhuang – S328 Changqing Road – Beijing Qinglong Lake Park). The total distance is about 10 kilometers, with good road conditions and flat terrain. Fourth Segment: From Dahuichang Village to Jietai Temple (Dahuichang Village – Dahuichang Road – G108 National Highway – Jietai Temple). The total distance is about 6 kilometers, mainly on asphalt and cement roads, with only about 100 meters of rough road surface. The uphill section is mostly gentle slopes until it meets the G108 highway intersection. This is the most scenic segment along the way, and beginners might want to try this section first for a unique experience.
