A 2011 Visa Global Travel Intentions Study released by Visa shows that China's affluent population is driving the growth of travel consumption. In 2011, the average single outbound trip expenditure of affluent Chinese tourists reached $4,448, higher than that of tourists from other Asian countries and regions, while the average spending of non-affluent individuals was $1,969. However, the consumption potential of non-affluent individuals should not be underestimated. For their next international trip, the average planned spending is $3,639 for the affluent and $2,278 for the non-affluent. In this report, the affluent are defined as households with an annual income of over $150,000.
France, Australia, and Japan are the top three international leisure travel destinations for China's affluent population.
