The presence of a moldy smell and/or small cross-shaped spots on the tent fabric indicates that the tent has mold. Mold can only grow and reproduce in dark, damp, and warm environments (dirt provides nutrients).
The fungus can actually penetrate the polyurethane coating of the tent fabric and grow between the fabric and the coating, eventually damaging the fabric. This type of damage is irreversible, but immediate action can prevent further mold growth and avoid more extensive damage. If your tent starts to grow mold, set it up and clean it thoroughly with warm soapy water and a sponge, then dry it with a clean sponge.
Next, wash it again using a sponge with half a cup of Lysol solution and one gallon of hot water. Let the solution sit on the fabric surface and air dry. Then, mix one cup of salt, one cup of concentrated lemon juice, and one gallon of hot water, work the solution into the visible mold spots, and let it dry.
This method can stop mold growth and eliminate the moldy smell, but it cannot remove mold stains. Damage caused by mold is not covered under warranty. These methods are provided solely to help extend the life of your tent if it gets moldy.
