Dinosaurs breaking through the window as soon as you wake up? Taiwan’s only “3D relief homestay” is in Hualien

Nowadays, accommodations compete not just on comfort and service, but also on distinctive interior and exterior designs that leave a deep impression—becoming one of the reasons travelers choose to stay again. A homestay business in Hualien“Sunflower 3D Relief Homestay”has pioneered Taiwan’s first-ever 3D relief homestay, integrating relief sculptures and 3D visual art throughout the property, making guests feel as if they’re staying in an art gallery. This unique lodging experience has been immensely popular with travelers since its opening.

Xiao Zhan, the person in charge of Sunflower 3D Relief Homestay, said that having seen 3D art exhibitions abroad before, he thought it would be special to incorporate this art form into a homestay. Coupled with the fact that no one in Taiwan had tried it yet, he specially invited two national treasure-level masters—teachers Liu Rensheng and Chen Xiejian—to help. From the lobby to every room, the interplay of three-dimensional light and shadow from reliefs and 3D optical illusions combines to breathe new life into the entire property, making guests reluctant to leave as soon as they step inside. They pose for photos in all kinds of interactive stances in front of the artworks, quickly filling up their phone storage.

In fact, starting from the entrance design, Sunflower 3D Relief Homestay already makes guests want to take pictures non-stop. Part of the floor is painted like the ocean, decorated with various driftwood installation artworks and a swing, making travelers feel like they’re admiring the ocean beneath their feet on the beach. As soon as you step into the lobby, 3D visual art transports you into a richly biodiverse underwater world, with even a whale seemingly breaking through the wall, as if swimming right up to the guests.

The dining area takes on a different scene, as if you’ve stepped into a jungle, with a giraffe bending its head through the window, as though admiring the “lost-in-the-jungle” guests. On another wall, a white bird with outstretched wings perches on a tree branch, while a babbling brook flows beneath your feet. Each 3D artwork offers great opportunities for guests to take photos.

Xiao Zhan said that currently, Sunflower 3D Relief Homestay has five guest rooms, each with a different theme—Jurassic World, Countryside, Ocean, Starry Sky, and Industrial Style. For example, the four-person Jurassic World room features a T-Rex standing on the wall behind the bed, ready to hunt, even appearing as if it might break through the window. Guests who wake up groggily might be startled awake by the T-Rex seemingly trying to break in. This highly playful design allows guests to spend half a day just taking photos in their room.

In addition to 3D art, some rooms feature relief-style designs. For instance, the “Fantasy Drift” double room has walls adorned with relief art of continuously crashing waves. The dolphins jumping on the bedding represent Hualien’s popular activity—whale and dolphin watching. From the walls to the ceiling and cabinets, everything relates to the ocean, making it feel like falling asleep embraced by the gentle sea.
