Xinhua News Agency, Bomê, Tibet, May 7 — According to the Fourth Detachment of the Armed Police Traffic Force, at around 9 a.m. on the 7th, a roadbed collapse occurred on the Sichuan-Tibet Highway within Bomê County. The original roadbed, which was over 5 meters wide, collapsed by half. Currently, the remaining width is only slightly more than 2 meters, making it no longer passable for vehicles. As of press time, over 50 vehicles and nearly 100 people are stranded here.
According to the Fourth Detachment of the Armed Police Traffic Force, which is responsible for the maintenance and traffic upkeep of the Sichuan-Tibet Highway, the collapse occurred west of the Tongmai Bridge within Bomê County. This area is home to the 14-kilometer section of the Sichuan-Tibet Highway known for its treacherous conditions. This section is a makeshift road prone to geological disasters, suffering from frequent landslides and mudflows year-round, making it a notorious "bottleneck" on the Sichuan-Tibet Highway. Li Xianghua, political commissar of the Fourth Detachment of the Armed Police Traffic Force, who is currently directing emergency repairs on-site, told reporters that the detachment has collaborated with local public security authorities to impose traffic control on the affected section, prohibiting vehicle passage. Meanwhile, efforts are underway to blast and widen the road by targeting the rocky mountain on the inner side of the road.
Li Xianghua said that due to the high difficulty of the blasting work and the complex situation of the repairs, it is expected to take at least three days before normal vehicle passage can be restored.
