chinanews.com, May 7 — According to Voice of America, two American hikers who were detained in Iran on spying charges three years ago are set to get married, and the ceremony will not be open to the public.
A relative said Shane Bauer and Sarah Shourd will marry this Saturday (the 12th) in California, though the location has not been disclosed.
Iranian authorities detained Bauer, Shourd, and another American, Josh Fattal, in 2009 on espionage charges. Iran claimed they had illegally crossed into Iran from Iraq.
Shourd was released after 14 months on bail of $500,000. Bauer and Fattal were freed more than two years later.
While both were in prison, Bauer proposed to Shourd, fashioning a ring out of thread from his shirt.
All three Americans have maintained their innocence, saying they were hiking in the northern mountains of Iraq at the time. They stated that if they did cross the unmarked border into Iran, it was unintentional.
