Fellow players tried to save him but failed
At around 4 p.m. on the 27th, the basketball court near the east gate of Chaoyang Park, where the incident occurred, was open as usual, with many people playing basketball.
According to a netizen who posted on Weibo, he was also playing basketball on the same court when the incident happened. Suddenly, an overweight man collapsed and lost consciousness.
Another player said that after the man fell, one Chinese and two foreigners kept trying to revive him, but were unsuccessful.
Photos taken by netizens at the scene show a man lying near the edge of the basketball court, surrounded by several people, some of whom held up large plastic boards to shield the fallen man from the sun.
Nearly 20 minutes later, emergency personnel arrived. Players said that after administering a series of resuscitation measures including electric shocks to the unconscious man, they announced “no signs of life.”
One player said the man was about 175 cm tall and appeared to weigh close to 200 jin (“He may have succumbed due to the high temperature, strenuous exercise, or a combination of both,” he added).
A fellow rescuer said the man’s classmate told them he was pursuing an MBA alone at Tsinghua University and was set to graduate the following week.

On that hot noon, the ambulance arrived promptly as people held up boards to shield the unconscious man from the sun.

  ■ Reminder
Take precautions against heatstroke during outdoor exercise in hot weather
Emergency medical personnel from 120 explained that there are many causes of sudden cardiac death, the most common being sudden cardiac arrest, including myocardial infarction, congenital heart disease, and myocarditis. Cases of stroke, heatstroke, and respiratory diseases have also led to sudden death. Medical personnel reminded the public to perform adequate warm-up exercises before engaging in strenuous activity. When exercising outdoors in hot weather, it is important to stay cool and prevent heatstroke—especially for those who are overweight, who should avoid prolonged physical exertion.
