On June 7, 2012, the highly anticipated "Red Bull 24-Hour" Plateau Challenge will be grandly held at the Jiaozi Snow Mountain Scenic Area in Kunming, Yunnan Province. The Red Bull 24-Hour is China's only non-stop outdoor competition that spans day and night. This year marks its first time in the high-altitude region of Yunnan, with the event location averaging an altitude of 3,500 meters. At that time, the "Red Bull 24-Hour" will lead domestic extreme sports enthusiasts to "march into" the plateau for an all-weather, all-terrain, all-sports extreme sports experience at high altitude.
The event is divided into a professional group and an experience group, with a total of 20 teams participating. The race course is approximately 55 kilometers long. The event is based on the format of the Eco-Challenge, known for its "non-stop" characteristic, and adopts a continuous (non-stop) team race system. Each team consists of four members who set their own pace and complete a series of professionally demanding activities—including run-bike alternation, nighttime orienteering, fixed-point hill climbing, rock climbing, rappelling, as well as puzzle-solving and archery—within 24 hours as a team. Especially enduring 24 consecutive hours of competition at an altitude above 3,500 meters poses the most severe physical and mental challenge for the participants.
It is understood that the "Red Bull 24-Hour Plateau Challenge" originated from the "Powerful Kunming" Jiaozi Snow Mountain Crossing Challenge, which was established in 2006. Thanks to Yunnan’s unique outdoor resources and mountainous terrain, the "Red Bull 24-Hour," after hosting a coastal challenge in Shenzhen last year, quickly turned its attention to Yunnan and ultimately chose Jiaozi Snow Mountain. The area not only features a rich variety of terrains such as high-altitude mountains, valleys, streams, and cliffs, but also presents a major challenge to participants' professional skills and overall capabilities, while offering all outdoor enthusiasts a distinctive sporting experience. It is expected that nearly 500 outdoor sports enthusiasts from Yunnan, Guizhou, Xinjiang, Sichuan, and other regions will compete in this event to vie for multiple awards.
