Our Newspaper News (Reporter Mingsheng, Intern Qiu Pei, Correspondent Liu Bin) Yesterday afternoon, the second selection event co-hosted by our newspaper and Wuhan Polar Ocean World, “Take Wuhan Citizens to Antarctica,” was held on Guanggu Pedestrian Street. Out of 38 contestants, 21 successfully advanced to the top 50.
Among the contestants who took the stage, the most surprising were Chen Chen and Cao Zhikai, members of the China University of Geosciences Mountaineering Team who had just returned from climbing Mount Everest. Chen Chen successfully reached the summit of Mount Everest, while Cao Zhikai was assigned to stay at the base camp. This time, the two teammates appeared on stage together to compete for two spots on a scientific expedition to Antarctica representing the university’s mountaineering team. Their extraordinary experiences, touching environmental stories, and deep understanding of conservation moved the judges, and both successfully advanced to the top 50.
Qin Siyuan, an 8-year-old student from the affiliated primary school of China University of Geosciences, also took the stage to compete, becoming the youngest contestant to advance to the top 50. “I want to go to Antarctica to see the penguins!” she expressed her wish to go to Antarctica in a childlike voice, making the entire audience laugh.
The environmental protection associations of Wuhan Textile University and Hubei University of Economics also signed up for the selection as a group, with several members from each school eventually advancing.
After the first two selection events held on Jianghan Road Pedestrian Street and Guanggu Pedestrian Street, a total of 44 contestants have advanced to the top 50. The remaining six spots will be determined in the third selection event.
