Victims found 300 meters down a cliff
At around 8 p.m. on the 26th, it was raining in the northern scenic area of Phoenix Ridge, and the ground was slippery. Several ambulances, police cars, and fire trucks were parked at the entrance to the scenic area.
According to witnesses, they saw people falling from near the mountaintop on the opposite hillside to the base of the mountain.
Haidian police stated that at around 4 p.m. yesterday, they received a report from the public about tourists falling in Phoenix Ridge. After receiving the call, Haidian police, the Phoenix Ridge fire brigade, and medical personnel quickly arrived at the scene.
According to rescuers, at around 6 p.m. last night, they began searching the area near the reported location. Below a cliff approximately 300 meters high, they found two women and one man lying at the bottom. After calling out to them, they found that all three showed no signs of life.
Rescue suspended due to heavy rain en route
Rescuers immediately lowered ropes down the cliff and sent personnel equipped with rescue gear down to attempt a rescue.
Because it was raining in the mountains at the time and the paths were slippery, it took rescuers about ten minutes to make their way down bit by bit. Around 7 p.m., the woman in the yellow clothing was pulled up by the rescuers.
It is reported that the woman in yellow was around 30 years old and was barely alive when rescued. Due to combined chest and abdominal injuries, the injured woman was taken to a nearby hospital, but soon passed away.
Rescuers said that upon close confirmation, the other man and woman had no signs of life. As rescuers prepared to bring the bodies of the two deceased up the mountain, the rain intensified. The slippery road conditions made it very dangerous to carry out the rescue at the base of the cliff. Rescuers decided to temporarily withdraw and prepare a new rescue plan.
On the evening of the 26th, when asked why the scenic area remained open despite the rain, an administrator at Phoenix Ridge said that the scenic area has no regulation to close during rainy weather, and it was not raining at the scenic area around 4 p.m. that afternoon.
