Artists Create Site-Specific Works in Cultural Landscapes – The 2016 North Coast Art Festival Kicks Off in September

Art and landscape enthusiasts, rejoice!The 2016 North Coast Art Season is set to launch in September, centered around the coastal and mountain scenery, as well as the historical and cultural heritage of the North Coast. Featuring multiple domestic and international artists, the festival invites on-site creations of artworks that capture the unique essence of the North Coast. When you visit the North Coast in the future, in addition to its stunning coastline, be sure to explore the art landscape exhibition areas and experience the fusion of local culture and art.

This year’s event spansTamsui, Bali, Sanzhi, Shimen, Wanli, and Jinshan—six districts—featuring 18 site-specific installations and two permanent artworks. In addition to admiring the artworks, the organizer, New Taipei City Government’s Department of Cultural Affairs, has also planned art workshops and weekend cultural performances to offer visitors a richer experience. Moreover, a market will also be held at Tamsui Customs Wharf on September 3 and 4.

Participating artist Zhu Weilong, who is of Malaysian descent, created the work "Island of the Wind," installed at Laomei Elementary School in Shimen District, New Taipei City. The piece ties into the area’s wind power industry, allowing visitors to remember the stories of their hometown amid the sounds of the wind. Zhu Weilong noted that he plans to involve the public through a participatory project with schoolchildren, fostering a deeper sense of connection to their living environment. He hopes that art can bring a unique experience to local residents.
