A self-driving journey of nearly 20,000 kilometers from Beijing to London to attend the Paralympics will be accomplished by a group of people with physical disabilities. In front of the Bird’s Nest, the main stadium for the opening and closing ceremonies of the last Olympics, 12 disabled individuals set off in six cars.
On the morning of the 20th, a group of wheelchair users held hands tightly, encouraging one another. Six specially modified vehicles equipped with hand controls waited quietly in front of the Bird’s Nest.
He Yuelin, torchbearer of the previous Olympics and known as the “King of Driving Without Hands,” joined the self-driving team. He wore his torchbearer uniform and brought along the torch. With over 30 years of driving experience and participation in various domestic and international racing events, he will serve as the team’s technical advisor and transportation support personnel.
For this self-driving tour, a company has provided all disabled participants with free tickets to the Paralympic opening ceremony in London, and donated a wheelchair to each of the 14 severely mobility-impaired drivers.
