On August 4, at the Potala Palace Square in Tibet, 21-year-old Zhu Lijie from Gaobeidian finally fulfilled his long-held dream of cycling to Lhasa.
Two years ago, Zhu Lijie fell in love with cycling and often spent weekends exploring local areas and nearby counties with fellow cyclists, promoting low-carbon environmental knowledge along the way, which received positive feedback from family and friends. After finishing the gaokao this year, Zhu decided to make use of the rare summer break before stepping into the broader society to embark on a long-distance cycling trip to demonstrate and temper his perseverance and willpower as a young man. After careful consideration, he chose to cycle all the way to Lhasa to promote low-carbon environmentalism.
After thorough preparation, on July 15, he gathered with four online friends in Xining and began their challenging ride. With strong determination and fearless courage, they overcame difficulties such as high-altitude thin air, crossed more than ten mountains over 4,000 meters above sea level, traversed an uninhabited area, were hit twice by fierce plateau hail, and struggled to breathe under the scorching sun. After 20 tough days of cycling, they finally reached their long-awaited destination—Lhasa.

On August 6, the author contacted Zhu Lijie, who was resting at Lhasa’s Pingcuo Youth Hostel before returning home. He shared that he had been admitted to a university and would set off for home on the 9th. Reflecting on the trip and his future plans, he said, “Although the journey was long and tough, it strengthened my willpower. The stunning scenery along the way further deepened my love for my country and made me realize the importance and responsibility of promoting low-carbon environmentalism to protect our beautiful homeland. In the future, I will continue to cycle and promote low-carbon environmentalism, further spreading these ideas and contributing to the nation’s sustainable development.”
