Afternoon tea time is when cravings strike, but you don’t want to eat too much. That’s when simple and compact snacks become the public’s favorite, making wheel cakes one of the top choices. Baked until the exterior is soft and fluffy, with a burst of filling that delivers a satisfying fullness in every bite, they are truly the epitome of simple yet delicious food. But after trying so many wheel cakes, have you ever seen a square one? And here, the shop has even thickened the crust, giving it an impressively cake-like density—truly anupgraded version of the wheel cake!

▲The thicker filling adds an extra layer of softness.
Located in Caotun, Little Mountain Ji Japanese Square Bun stands out for its unique shape—not only is it square, but it also features a printed mountain pattern on the exterior, exuding a strong Japanese vibe. As for the ingredients, the shop specially uses fresh, low-temperature eggs and milk to make the crust, creating a texture that falls between a pancake and a sponge cake. The square shape allows for a thicker crust, and when you take a bite, the softness is even more pronounced, almost like eating a small, delicate cake. The texture is refreshingly unique.。

▲Currently, there are eight fixed flavors of square buns available!
Beyond the special crust, creative fillings are another highlight here, including dragon fruit and pineapple; honey matcha red beans—a favorite among girls; and a savory-spicy combo of Korean kimchi cheese, among eight different flavors. Each ingredient is handmade by the owner, offering a mix of classic and innovative flavors in a simple package.

▲The shop also introduces seasonal specials.
Recently, to beat the summer heat, the shop launched a “frozen version” of the square bun. However, due to refrigeration, the savory flavors are only available warm—offering both cold and hot options that expand the possibilities of the square bun and keep the Japanese square bun craze going strong in Taichung.
