On August 11, after 105 days, passing through 13 provinces including Henan, Anhui, Hubei, and Jiangxi, covering a total distance of over 9,200 kilometers, three cyclists safely returned to Xinxiang.
That morning, many cyclists went to Xinxiang’s National Highway 107 to welcome the three heroes. On July 27, Zhang Zhengzhou, Zhu Wenxian, and Shang Guangmei, the three cyclists, completed their epic ride by pedaling over 7,000 kilometers to Wuqi Town in Shaanxi Province with remarkable perseverance. After a few days of rest, following their return plan, the trio rode another 2,000 kilometers, passing through Weinan, Sanmenxia, and Luoyang, before finally arriving safely back in Xinxiang on August 11.
Due to the long period of cycling, the three looked somewhat fatigued, but they still insisted on using photos to share what they saw and experienced along the way (pictured). According to Zhang Zhengzhou, completing the Long March route required not only overcoming harsh geographical conditions and unexpected events, but more importantly, having a determined heart. When they cycled through the Wumeng Mountains, it rained every day and they crossed mountains daily — even walking is difficult there now, so one can imagine how much tougher it was for the Red Army back then. Another challenge was cycling through the Five Ridges, an area at the junction of Guangdong, Guangxi, and Hunan, deep in the mountains where the population remains sparse even today.
“What was your biggest feeling and takeaway from the whole journey?” someone asked. “Not only did it strengthen me physically, but it also gave me a deeper understanding of China’s revolutionary history. I truly felt that every step of the Chinese revolution was incredibly hard-won,” said Shang Guangmei.
By cycling the Long March route, the three cyclists, all over fifty years old, showcased the enterprising spirit of Xinxiang residents and earned widespread admiration.
“I really admire their spirit and actions, and I’m very grateful that they presented a positive image of Xinxiang throughout their journey,” said one cyclist.
