Rock Climbing(Rock Climbing)is a sport derived from mountaineering. Itshistory can be traced back to 18th-century European mountaineering. At that time, after mountaineers had successively completed traditional routes on major peaks, they began developing new techniques and using modern equipment. In the70late 1900s, rock climbing gradually developed in France and eventually became a truly independent sport. Moreover, on mountain walls mixed with ice, snow, and rock terrain, climbers pioneered routes once deemed impossible—this gave rise to modern rock climbing techniques.
Traditional climbing(Traditional Rock Climbing)involves using chocks(Chocks)and cams(SLCD(also commonly known asCamalot),Friend)as protection points, along with rope team techniques to ascend natural rock formations.
In traditional climbing, climbers face more external risks such as leader falls, falling rocks from above, and sudden weather changes, thus requiring solid technical training, extensive climbing experience, and professional gear.
Depending on the climbing style, it can be divided into5types:
1Traditional Climbing:(Traditional Climbing)This involves climbers placing their own protection points along the route with the goal of completing the entire climb. Since there are no permanent anchors, traditional climbs usually follow cracks. It can be further divided into aid climbing and free climbing.
2Aid Climbing:(Aid Climbing)This involves using artificial tools and equipment to assist in the ascent, relying on gear such as ladders, fixed points, and protection devices like ascenders, etriers, pitons, and hammers. However, due to the environmental damage caused by pitons, they are generally used only for protection or belaying in modern, eco-conscious climbing.…Free Climbing:
3This term emerged in contrast to aid climbing. It involves ascending solely by using one’s hands and feet to grip natural holds and footholds. Traditional gear is used only for setting up protection, not for upward progress, and the rope serves only as a safety measure.(Free Climbing)Sport Climbing:
4Unlike traditional climbing, the route already has pre-placed protection points, so climbers do not need to place their own. Over time, due to advancements in technique and equipment—and to promote accessibility—sport climbing has become the mainstream form of climbing due to its safety and ease of entry. Originally evolving from traditional climbing, some climbers moved away from alpine rock faces, giving rise to this new discipline. Climbers tackle routes with permanent protection, whether on artificial or natural walls. The goal isn’t just reaching the top but also mastering more challenging routes.(Sport Climbing)Bouldering:
5This style does not use ropes and is typically done at lower heights—(Bouldering)around(about6under)climbing is performed without ropes, using crash pads instead. Note that bouldering must be distinguished from free soloing.(Solo)Free soloing is an extremely high-risk form of rock climbing.
Rock climbing captivates people with its unique charm and distinctive character. Engaging in this activity allows you to learn resilience while challenging cliffs, feel tolerance in the embrace of mountains, and enjoy the joy of success and victory after conquering a climbing route.
