The 2012 KAILAS Yangshuo Climbing Festival officially kicked off today at the main venue on the charming East Street in Yangshuo. Despite the unexpected heavy rain, the enthusiasm of climbers and outdoor lovers from various regions remained undiminished, with nearly 500 participants from across China and around the world joining the festival’s opening ceremony and activities such as “Climb More, Win More.” Highlights included a touching and unique marriage proposal on the rainy climbing wall in the morning, as well as a dynamic slacklining performance by Zhang Liang. The most exciting event, however, was the afternoon’s Bouldering Competition where local and international climbers went head to head.

It is reported that on that day, nearly 100 athletes from 12 countries and regions, including China, took part in the preliminary rounds of the men’s and women’s bouldering competitions. Together, they competed for a spot on the list of 24 finalists who will advance to the finals the next day.
Compared to last year, the competition at this year’s bouldering event was even fiercer. According to the rules, each participant was required to complete three routes of varying difficulty levels. Today’s event not only successfully attracted many foreign climbers visiting China, but also greatly motivated a large number of Chinese climbers to take part enthusiastically. For a time, an exciting showdown—“a battle of climbers from China and abroad”—unfolded in the Yangshuo Bouldering Competition. The spectacular “dance on the rock face,” strong determination, and remarkable skills delighted the audience and drew loud cheers and support for every competitor.
