According to China News Service, perhaps the scorching hot volcanic lava gave Gail De Klerk the courage—he finally proposed to his girlfriend at the edge of an active volcano 3,470 meters above sea level, becoming “the happiest man in the world.”
It is reported that Gail De Klerk, a 37-year-old Bulgarian photographer, proposed to his 35-year-old girlfriend at the crater of Mount Nyiragongo in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and she said yes. The couple took a joyful photo together at the volcano’s edge.
It is said that De Klerk has long worked as a photographer in Africa. His girlfriend, Gisette, is a geographer who recently traveled to Africa for a week specifically to see him. De Klerk said he had been wondering whether to take her to see the volcano or the gorillas, but ultimately chose the former.
They hiked up Mount Nyiragongo and spent the night on the mountain. That evening, after both had climbed to exhaustion and returned to their tent, De Klerk naturally asked, “Will you marry me?” His girlfriend replied, “Yes.”
It is reported that Mount Nyiragongo is an active volcano. Its most recent eruption occurred on January 17, 2001, when it left a 13-kilometer-long fissure along its southern ridge.
