As the weather gets colder, ski resorts in the suburbs of Beijing have gradually reopened. Reporters learned today from Beijing Emergency Medical Center's 120 service that there has been a significant rise in the number of patients with skiing-related accidental injuries being transported by 120 recently; from November 2011 to March 2012, the Beijing Emergency Medical Center treated over a hundred cases of trauma patients from various ski resorts.
The experts at Beijing Emergency Medical Center remind the public that to prevent skiing-related accidental injuries, the first step is to be well-prepared before hitting the slopes. Beginners are advised to find a more skilled coach or companion to guide them and should only ski alone after mastering the basics. Don’t forget to do warm-up exercises before skiing. Warming up increases the flexibility and range of motion of joints and ligaments, and skiing after a proper warm-up can generally reduce the likelihood of falls. If you lose your balance and are about to fall, immediately bend your body to lower your center of gravity; try to tuck in your limbs before hitting the ground to minimize injury. Avoid carrying sharp objects such as nail clippers or knives, as well as fragile glass bottles in your pockets, to prevent cuts or puncture wounds from falls. If you experience severe pain after a fall, do not attempt to get up and walk immediately—call for help nearby. In the case of severe lower back pain, dial the emergency number to seek professional assistance.
