This morning, the second session of the ninth CPPCC committee of Haidian District commenced. Reporters learned that Haidian District will accelerate the development of the "Three Hills and Five Gardens" historical and cultural scenic area this year, officially launching the renovation and relocation work of surrounding villages, with a focus on environmental improvement in the urban-rural fringe areas around the Old Summer Palace, the Summer Palace, and Fragrant Hills, completing the relocation and renovation of villages outside the west wall of the Central Party School.
The "Three Hills and Five Gardens" specifically include the royal gardens in the western suburbs of Beijing along the Western Hills to the Wanquan River—Jingyi Garden in Jing Shan, Jingming Garden in Yu Quan Shan, Qingyi Garden (now the Summer Palace) in Wan Shou Shan, Changchun Garden, and the Old Summer Palace.
A Haidian District official said that because the areas around the Three Hills and Five Gardens are part of the urban-rural fringe, the district has already started drafting specific renovation plans for the surrounding villages. This year, efforts will be intensified to improve the environment in key zones. The renovation plan for the area around the Old Summer Palace includes six natural villages: Yi Mu Yuan, Fu Yuan Men, Shui Mo, and Er He Kai, the area outside the west wall of the Central Party School near both the Central Party School and the National Defense University, as well as the next phase, where Liulang Zhuang Village will be greened on its original site. Together with the already-greened Haidian Park and the greenbelt along the Jingmi Irrigation Canal nearby, they will form a green buffer zone.
At the same time, the area around the north gate of the Summer Palace in Haidian District will restore the historic appearance of Qinglongqiao Ancient Town. In the central area at the foot of Fragrant Hills, the historic streetscapes of Mai Mai Jie and Mei Chang Jie will be restored. A 40-kilometer-long greenway will be constructed in the western suburbs of Beijing, starting from Haidian Park, passing through the Summer Palace, Shiquan Roundabout, Fragrant Hills, Jinyuan Bridge, and finally following the Kunyu River back to Haidian Park. It will consist of two parts: a pedestrian walkway and a bicycle path, for citizens to stroll and cycle.
