When traveling, blisters on the feet are a common occurrence. They can disrupt your trip and, if not treated properly, may lead to infection.
Blisters form when the soles of the feet become sweaty and the skin softens. Prolonged pressure and friction cause local tissue fluid to seep out. They are often related to ill-fitting shoes or socks, uneven terrain, inconsistent walking pace, and lack of physical conditioning among travelers.
To prevent blisters, pay attention to the following: First, ensure your shoes and socks fit well—shoes should not be too high or too tight. It’s best to wear semi-new rubber or cloth shoes. Women should avoid wearing high-heeled, hard-soled leather shoes. Insoles should be flat, and socks should be free of holes or wrinkles. Remove any sand that gets inside your shoes promptly and keep both shoes and socks dry. Second, when hiking, progress gradually from short to longer distances. Maintain a steady and even pace, avoiding sudden changes in speed. Third, soak your feet in hot water before bed to promote local blood circulation. Massage the soles of your feet with your hands or apply kerosene to the protruding areas of the soles. Additionally, you can use medication for prevention: boil 4 taels each of Ligusticum chuanxiong, Asarum, Saposhnikovia divaricata, and Angelica dahurica in 5 jin of water until reduced to 3 jin. Apply the mixture to the soles of your feet once a day before hiking.
If a blister does occur, there is currently no perfect treatment—mainly involving puncturing and draining the blister. First, soak your feet in hot water for 5–10 minutes, then dry them. Next, disinfect the blister area with iodine or alcohol. Use a sterilized needle (you can boil the needle or soak it in alcohol) to puncture the blister and allow the fluid to drain out. You can also use a sterilized horsehair to draw out the fluid through the blister. However, never cut off the blister skin during treatment to avoid infection.
