Fly kites and enjoy the sea view – take a light trip to the North Coast to catch the tail end of summer

Haven’t been to the beach this summer yet? Quickly embrace the sand and sea at the end of the season. New Taipei City’s North Coast includes the eastern part of the city as well as the Guanyinshan National Scenic Area, featuring azure seascapes, majestic mountain views, and a wealth of rocky landscapes. Famous attractions such as Laomei Rock Formations, Fugui Cape, and Yehliu Geopark are all must-sees. With such a beautiful coastline, how can you not go for some photos and Instagram-worthy moments?
No. 2 Warehouse Café
Located in Sanchih, the No. 2 Warehouse Café was created by renovating two abandoned rice warehouses and preserving the Japanese-style wooden roof trusses. Designed by local artists, it serves as a cultural and creative exhibition space and café, showcasing works such as pottery, sculpture, and ink paintings by various artists, adding a distinct Sanchih flair to the café.
The open space under the preserved Japanese-style wooden roof allows sunlight to stream in, creating a warm and artistic atmosphere.
The interior decor, crafted by local artists, showcases a mix of traditional and modern aesthetics, making the space both nostalgic and stylish.
The café’s furnishings also use materials salvaged from the original warehouses, retaining a sense of history and charm.
The café also displays and sells artworks by local artist Wu Zhongzong,including his “Chubby Lady” series, inspired by his wife. With their adorable plump figures and sleepy eyes, Wu jokes, “There are many chubby women, but the Chubby Lady is one of a kind!” Wu’s ink paintings also feature the “Chubby Lady,” showing that every piece is filled with love.The unique character designs and heartfelt touches in Wu’s artworks make them truly special.
The café offers a cozy environment perfect for chatting with friends.
The “Chubby Lady” series is especially popular among visitors for its charm and whimsy.
Shanchai Bajia Wood-Fired Kiln Studio
In Shimen, the “Shanchai Bajia Wood-Fired Kiln Studio” preserves the most traditional wood-firing techniques, allowing pottery to develop natural colors through fire and ash during the firing process. Studio owner Xu Junxiang says that because his family ran a pottery shop, he became interested in ceramics from a young age. Although wood-firing is time-consuming and labor-intensive, the results are always surprising, as you never know what unique effects will emerge.
Many of the pieces produced here feature rich, organic glazes that cannot be replicated by modern methods.
The greenish and earthy hues on the pottery are all naturally formed during the firing process.
Xu explains that the firing process takes 4 days and nights, with the pottery needing to be turned at specific times, making it a meticulous craft.
Fugui Cape
One of the must-visits on the North Coast is Fugui Cape. Walking along the trails in Fugui Cape Park, you can see unique coastal rock formations like wind-eroded stones and Laomei Rock Formations, with paths leading all the way to Fugui Cape Lighthouse. In addition to these natural wonders, the inner side of the trail is lined with silver grass, while the other side offers views of Laomei Beach. Visiting the trail during the silver grass blooming season is an absolute delight.
The silver grass landscape is one of the most iconic sights in northern Taiwan.
The coastal rock formations are a unique geological feature of the region, with some viewpoints also showcasing impressive art installations.
Just a five-minute walk from the main area leads to the trail where you can enjoy stunning ocean views.
Wind Art Camp
The “Wind Art Camp” next to the Fugui Cape Recreation Area is perfect for families. In addition to seeing many different types of kites, you can also try stunt kites and DIY kite painting on this vast grassy field, making it a fun activity for parents and children alike. Owner Li Qingtian says with a smile, “We often host kite events here. If you’re looking for the kite capital of Taiwan, it’s got to be Shimen!”
The wide open space is great for flying kites safely.
The camp provides guidance on how visitors can create and paint their own kites.
The Wind Art Camp is especially ideal for group outings, says one visitor.
