1: Warm-up exercises
It probably goes without saying that warming up before exercising is essential, especially before running, when stretching your legs is particularly important. Only with proper warm-up and adequate stretching can your calves perform at their “best” during the workout.
2: Landing Technique
This is the most crucial technique for running to lose weight. Many women run using their forefeet to land, which feels easy and effortless, but this is not suitable for those with thicker calves. The correct way to avoid bulky calves is to land on your heels first, then let the entire foot touch the ground while jogging slowly. You can think of it as power walking—just recall, have you ever seen a race walker with overly muscular calves?
3: Aerobic Exercise
The real fat-burning process doesn’t start until after 30 minutes of continuous exercise, so you need to run for at least half an hour. It’s important to note that more intense exercise does not necessarily mean better weight loss results. Focusing solely on calories burned per session is a mistake. A moderate jogging pace of 6–8 km/hr is ideal. Once you increase the intensity and speed, you do burn more calories, but your calves and knees will bear excessive strain, leading to faster muscle growth.
4: Calf Stretching
Stretching after exercise is a vital step in shaping your calves. Here’s a tip: for those who prefer to take it easy, you can skip the traditional method of propping your leg up and pressing it down. A more convenient alternative is to stand about an arm’s length away from a wall, place your hands on the wall for support, and angle your body about 30 degrees from the wall. Hold the position for 5 minutes, feeling your calf muscles stretch to the max—you can adjust based on your flexibility.
5: Soaking Your Legs in Hot Water
Don’t think your leg workout ends just with stretching. There’s one more step in your beautiful legs plan: soaking your calves in hot water after running. You can get a wooden bucket, soak your legs, listen to music or read a book, all of which help boost blood circulation in your calves. After soaking, massage your calves with lotion. The type of cream isn’t too important—just apply it from the bottom up, massaging in circles until fully absorbed. Once applied, gently pat your calves to help the muscles fully relax.
