China Airlines announces reduction in excess baggage fees！ Daily routes from $15 to $6 per kilogram

China Airlines announced on the 2nd that starting October 1, it will reduce the overweight baggage fee standards under the weight-based system for regional routes, including comprehensive reductions for round-trip routes to Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia, cross-strait, Europe, and Oceania (excluding the U.S. and Canada), with the European routes seeing the highest reduction of over 70%. For Japan routes, the fee is reduced from the current $15 per kilogram to $6 per kilogram, aiming to allow travelers to enjoy their trips and shopping sprees even more.

In July, China Airlines expanded the free checked baggage allowance by “10 kilograms” for various cabin classes in regions using the weight-based system, including Asia (encompassing Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia, and mainland China), New Zealand and Australia, and Europe. However, if baggage exceeds the free checked allowance, additional fees apply, calculated based on the on-site weighed amount and converted according to the local currency value on the departure day. China Airlines stated that to better meet travelers’ needs, it is further reducing excess baggage fees, hoping to enhance service competitiveness through these fee adjustments.

Taking Japan as an example, starting October, the overweight fee is reduced from the current $15 per kilogram to $6 per kilogram, significantly better than those of competitors; for long-haul European routes, the previous overweight charge was $50 per kilogram, but starting October, it will only be $15 per kilogram—a reduction of up to 70%, making it also the most competitively priced among domestic carriers.
